Jason Detwiler is becoming well-known for his magnetic and energizing performances on the opera stage. His voice and acting have been described as "emotionally fervid", "richly expressive" and "commanding", with a diverse repertoire ranging from the comedic Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) and Guglielmo (Cosi fan tutte) to the dramatic Renato (Un Ballo in Maschera) and Scarpia (Tosca). Among his most widely acclaimed roles are Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Zurga (Les Pechêurs de Perles), Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore), and John Proctor (The Crucible). His concert credits include: Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Saint-Säens' Christmas Oratorio and Faure's Requiem.
The 2007-2008 season has seen him return to Opera Idaho reprising the role of Marcello, and making his company/role debuts with Rimrock Opera as Jack Rance (La Fanciulla del West), and with Virginia Opera as Eugene Onegin. His season continued with a return engagement with Santa Cruz Chamber Orchestra as soloist in Faure's Requiem. From there, Mr. Detwiler sang for Syracuse Opera as Silvio/Mr. Gobineau in the double-bill of I Pagliacci/The Medium, and went on to cover the role of Zurga with San Diego Opera. Further down the road in 08-09, the baritone will debut with Opera Plus as Germont (La Traviata), with San Diego Opera as Yamadori (Madama Butterfly), and finish Virginia Opera's season by portraying his first Figaro in Il Barbieri di Siviglia.
A student of heldentenor, Claude Heater, he has also performed with Shreveport Opera, Rimrock Opera, Trinity Lyric Opera, Apollo Sierra Opera, Sacramento Opera, West Bay Opera, Opera Idaho, and Festival Opera of Walnut Creek. From 2002-2006, the young baritone was part of Irene Dalis' Opera San Jose as a Principal Resident Artist. While there, he sang Valentin (Faust), Silvio (I Pagliacci), Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana), Escamillo (Carmen), Marcello (La Boheme), John Proctor, Renato, and the title roles of Don Giovanni, Figaro and Der Fliegende Holländer among others.
Last season with much success, Mr. Detwiler portrayed the title role in a West Coast Premiere
of Vaughan Williams' Pilgrim's Progress with Trinity Lyric Opera. Some new and varied projects included the title role of Verdi's Macbeth and Yeletsky in Tchaikovsky's Pikovaya Dama, both with West Bay Opera. Also, Billy Bigelow (Carousel) with Shreveport Opera, Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas) with Santa Cruz Chamber Orchestra, and soloist in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with Vallejo Symphony Orchestra.
